I was puzzled by the crowd during the Prom. When Kurt's name was announced, there was NO laughter at all. The crowd stood in stony silence. One guy clapped. One guy went WOO! Nobody else said a word.

Were they angry at Kurt, or at the pranksters, or both?

Kurt made one sassy little quip, and the whole, unfriendly room roared with cheers. If they hated him so much, why did they cheer so easily?

Discuss.

New rule:

If you say "other" - please explain. That's the interesting part.

What I thought about it was that the jocks basically got together and voted for him. Lets say there are 3 major candidates for prom queen:

Lauren
Santana
Quinn

Adding in Kurt, that makes 4. Kurt would only need to get a minimum of 26% of the vote to win, given that everyone else got a roughly equal number of votes. That means that all of the jocks, who are pretty much pressured into hating Kurt, and are also under scrutiny for outward displays of hostility, had to find a different way of dealing with Kurt.

Lets say ALL of the jocks voted for him. That includes people like Finn who are on multiple teams, such as both Basketball (well last year he was) and Football, and people like Puck who are only on 1 sport. With all of the sports teams McKinley seems to have, football, basketball, hockey, and presumably soccer and/or track and field, that would mean that if every jock voted, Kurt would get WAY more than the needed number of votes.

That being said, it may have not been just the jocks. Remember what Puck said about anti-prom king? This could be the same people Puck was talking about who vote for the anti-king, but taking it in a whole new direction. The reason no one laughed was because that would give it away that there was something amiss.

Either way, the silence was more than likely the audience going "holy crap that worked?"

I think a large portion of the student body voted for him because someone told them too, they didn't think he would actually win. I think many of them voted for him because thats what everybody else was doing, while in actuality they were pretty indifferent towards Kurt.

I don't think that many of them were doing this because they had strong feelings of dislike towards him so when he won they felt bad about being a part of it. So when he handled it the way he did they embraced the fact that he was not letting it get to him.

Honestly?

I think it's just the result of cheesy writing. laugh.gif

It doesn't really tie in with the hostile, hostile looks pretty much everyone surrounding him was giving him when his name was called. And I don't, realistically, think looks like that would change with one, albeit awesome, moment of personal triumph.

Honestly I don't think the majority of the students were out to hurt him... it was probably a small group (I'm imagining started by Azimio) that actually wanted to humiliate him... probably also made sure Karofsky won king to punish him for abandoning them for the Bully Whips and escorting Kurt around... and after that it just sort of got out to the rest of the school to vote for the gay kid as queen... I don't think most of them thought about the consequences or how Kurt would react... they just thought it was a big joke, they'd all laugh and that would be the end of that... but then Kurt actually wins and they're slapped with the reality that it actually hurts him to be the butt of their joke, cue awkward silence... then he comes back and goes with it, they cheer because they feel let off the hook like he's in on the joke now

I interpreted the hostile looks as people being annoyed that Kurt 'ruined' prom. They were all hyped up and then suddenly Kurt was announced prom queen and they all glared at him like it was his fault that the moment was ruined. When bullies put victims in the spotlight, the general crowd will often blame the victim because they're the one at the centre of attention and easiest to blame. A room full of teenage children is no better than a herd of sheep.

That's a good answer, and I wish I'd thought of it when I was making the poll. However, this kind of response is the reason why I put down "other" as an option.

True. It is called "Glee logic" laugh.gif

The same way that one episode the glee club all love each other and the next they hate each other. Or when Glee club is meant to be hated by the school but then the whole school are cheering for them.

I agree I think it was the writing.

But I think partly it WAS practical. They wanted to laugh but they saw Figgins, (THEIR PRINCIPAL) (tbh the look on Figgins face scared me) and knew he could shut that fucking joint down and do them for homophobic bullying.

I think the student body was like "Oh my fucking god that's funny - but shit, man did that REALLY just happen?"

It's McKinley. One particular group (the jocks) decided to humiliate Kurt, but because Kurt won by a landslide, they probably managed to get pretty much everyone else to vote for Kurt out of fear and/or peer pressure. The clapping at the end was probably just to move past it and get back to partying.

After all, it's McKinley, where you can slushie people in the face and get away with it.

I think many of those who voted for him realised what they thought was funny in theory actually wasn't in practice. And I'm sure a lot weren't expecting it to work. As for the dirty looks, I think those giving Kurt dirty looks weren't involved in voting for him and thought he had engineered the whole thing himself (Like how most people reacted after Harry's name came out of the goblet in the fourth Harry Potter book).
