because if they used the exact song from the musical, it wouldn't fit Glee's story line at all...

What do you mean?
The background music for Defying Gravity in Glee was different than the one used in Wicked. If you listen to the parts used in Glee compared to the parts in Wicked, the music is different. I was wondering if anyone knew why exactly they chose to completely revamp the background music rather than just modifying it slightly from the original.

They used the pop-solo version of it as sang by Idina Menzel in her DG single

It's re-adapted from the ballad version Idina Menzel uses in her album, which is a solo song and sung more in the style of pop mainstream ballads. The harmonies that the Rachel/Kurt duet are from the original Broadway version, though.

I was wondering why they cut the final verse.
The "So if you care to find me?". I don't think it would have made sense in Glee-verse, the same with the first part of Rose's Turn.

For the showrunners, I'd say that it was a plot-issue, so Rachel and Kurt would be competing over a solo without the option of a duet being on the table. From an in-show perspective, I'd say that Mr. Schue chose the solo version of Defying Gravity because it was shorter and maybe easier to arrange.

And the Wicked version only has a very minor duet in it, and the rest of Glinda's part is all acting, which doesn't make sense in the context of a choir.
